Other Activities

In part due to its financial success and stability, MSLBD has initiated a variety of other activities beyond the annual conference.Beyond Behavior

  1. Magazine. A magazine was established and published and provided to MSLBD conference attendees and CCBD members in the four-state region. MSLBD's magazine, Behavior In Our Schools, was initiated in 1987, seven issues were produced, ending in the Spring of 1989. This effort eventually led through Symposium sponsorship to the creation by CCBD of Beyond Behavior in 1990. MSLBD co-sponsored with CCBD that first issue of Beyond Behavior, which had similar goals to that of Behavior In Our Schools. That publication has been continuously published ever since by CCBD without further support of MSLBD.Multicultural Issues

  2. Book. In 1993 a book appeared which was based on the 1990 Midwest Symposium conference program. The book, Edited by Reece L. Peterson and Sharon Ishii-Jordan was entitled Multicultural Issues in the Education of Students with Behavioral Disorders and was published by Brookline Books in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The book included chapters based on the MSLBD keynote presentations as well as numerous other chapters which were created for the book.

  3. Awards. Two major awards were established and first awarded in 1987.

  4. a. One was an "Outstanding Educator" award for practitioners serving students with emotional or behavioral disorders.
    b. The second was an award for "Outstanding Service" later changed to "Outstanding Leadership". Both awards have been awarded annually since that time. The awards both carried a cash stipend, as well as complimentary attendance (registration and travel) to the annual conference.
    c. Additionally an award has been created for direct service organizations (schools or treatment centers, for example). The "Building Bridges: Seeds for Program Development Award" may be used to support a variety of activities and programs to improve educational programs for students with behavior disorders. Purchase of curricula, materials, learning supplies, and support of classroom and school improvement projects are appropriate for this award.
    d. Finally, a new category of award for "Outstanding Advocacy" has also been established, but with only one person named as a recipient to date. A list of these various Award winners can be found in the appendix.
  5. Stipends. In addition to awards, the MSLBD also established three different stipend programs, one for undergraduate training, one for Masters level training in Behavioral Disorders, and the other for doctoral training. These stipends are awarded based on the availability of funding, but have been awarded between 1999 and 2005. When offered the stipends have included a cash award ($1000 undergraduate; $1,500 Masters level; and $2000 at the Doctoral level), travel expense reimbursement to the Symposium and an invitation to the Award Dinner held during the Symposium

  6. Think Tank Conferences. In response to perceived needs for new activities, and for opportunities to explore ideas in new settings, MSLBD initiated a series of new, small "think tank" type conferences. These conferences attempted to provide a focused, small conference atmosphere, and "think tank" type of sessions with lots of opportunities for interaction. They have involved two-day conferences, usually focusing on one topic of significance for the field of behavioral disorders. Most have provided an opportunity to bring together a few "outside professionals" from other collateral fields that might not be normally encountered by educators in their meetings. In most cases the presenters have been people who have made significant contributions to their own fields, and who are willing to translate their work or research in such a way as to make it accessible for us outside of that field. These meetings have permitted an intense examination of an issue in an informal and relatively small group setting. These small meetings have become known as the MSLBD Thank Tank Conferences (TT).

1998 "Brain Research", Excelsior Springs, MO.

  8. Brainstorming Retreats. In order to generate new ideas and create and offer more time for brainstorming and refocusing of the symposium, several brainstorming retreats have been held. The purpose of these retreats has been primarily for the Planning Committee to determine longer range goals, discuss organizational issues, and to identify new projects or ideas for potential implementation.
